🌿The saying ‘love the skin you’re in” is so true. When we take care of the outside, it benefits our inside. Every lotion, elixir, lipstick, eyes shadow, cleanser, etc. is absorbed into the skin in a matter of seconds and then enters the bloodstream. Pretty amazing when you think about it. BUT, do we want some of these ingredients in our blood circulating to our cells?
🌿The dealio is this. For whatever reason, in the United States federal government has shitty regulations when it comes to personal care products. Excuse my language, but this makes me furious. No NEW laws have been passed to regulate any of our products since 1938. Are you kidding me??? Congress did regulate some of the chemicals back in 1976, woo hoo, but nothing since. Europe is a bit stricter. They have regulated about 1300 yucky ingredients. Our yucky list in the US is 11. Are you pulling out your hair yet?
🌿So all these ingredients we see listed on labels (most we can’t pronounce) have not been tested and we have NO idea what the long term effects may be on our bodies. There is NO safety data. Guess what this means? We, humans, the consumer, are the ones being experimented on. It is no accident that cancer, allergy, ADHD, autism, and autoimmune diseases are rising. We all hear the statistics…more men and women are being diagnosed. What makes me mad is that our children, our babies are suffering from this ugly disease and other health problems.
🌿As consumers, for now, we have to read, study and take control of what products we bring into our homes. Here are a few red flags to look for…
🌿There are no skincare industry standards for products which claim to be “natural,” “organic,” “green,” “clean” or “non toxic.” This means ANYONE can put these words on a label. WTH? Don’t be fooled by green-washing and marketing techniques, be sure to do your research and check those ingredients. If a product is labeled as organic, look for certified organic ingredients in the ingredients list or the USDA Organic seal.
🌿A tool I use is the EWG App. The Environmental Working Group’s mission is “to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, they drive consumer choice and civic action. With their App, you can literally scan more than 120,000 food and personal care products and get a rating before you buy.
🌿Don’t fret, there are some companies out there who are ALL IN with creating safer products and being transparent with their ingredient list. They are on a mission to change the industry. Beauty doesn’t have to be scary or deadly.
🌿Here are a few personal care product companies I use and TRUST for me and my family.
